We left Big Sky on Saturday to head to our destination of
Flathead Lake with a quick & uneventful overnight stop in Missoula to break
up the drive. On Sunday morning we took off bright and early to head to
Flathead. Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi ... it's about 27.3 miles long and 15.5 miles wide ... it's bigger than Lake Tahoe! As we got closer to the lake we started to see signs for “huckleberry
shakes” which Montana is known for (reminded me of the raspberry shakes in Bear
Lake!) Apparently Montana is famous for everything “huckleberry “ so we will be
eating a lot of it the next week I’m sure. There also were a lot of cherry and
fruit stands- we passed by several orchard growing all kinds of fruit- apples, pears, peaches, plums, & nectarines in addition to the cherries.
Flathead Lake is HUGE & there are a multitude of little
towns and areas that you can stop at for a bite to eat, an overnight, or even
just to drop your boat or jet ski in the water which of course we did! The
water is so clear you can see right thru it in some places. We rode around for
a few hours and drove the jet ski right up to a cute little restaurant that we
sat on the upstairs patio overlooking the lake and shared some delicious fish
tacos for lunch.
We decided to stay in Bigfork since it had been recommended
by a few people and we’re happy we did! It’s a really cute little town (population 4,270) right on
the water with a fun little downtown strip of a few shops and restaurants and
hotels. Fun fact- Michael’s dad went to camp in Bigfork when he was a
teenager!!! We had a great dinner at Grille 459- mussels, salad, ono, & ahi
and a few glasss of vino and then walked around town a little bit, watched the
beautiful sunset over the lake and then off to bed!
